News and Updates

April, 2020

Dear Parents,

We had some parents inquire about the Dominican’s requirement for the recent information present on television.  On Sunday, 7 (seven) areas of Kaohsiung were discussed as areas of excessive gathering resulting in a possible lack of Social Distancing.

We appreciate the parents’ concern for the welfare of DISK students as well as their children. Dominican has requested complete guidance from the CECC and the Bureau of Education relating to the lastest television information.  The Bureau of Education acknowledged the information; however, they did not require self-isolation (self-quarantine) for visiting any of these 7 locations; however, the DISK community would like to encourage and appreciate the necessary self-heath management.

It was suggested that if you visit any of the seven sites, you should:  notify the office, be aware of your health, maintain wearing a mask, wash your hands frequently and have your temperature checked (three-time or more each day). At DISK, we monitor the students’ temperature twice a day (on arrival and before lunch). We also require students to wash and sanitize their hands multiple times each day.  Of course, if you are not feeling well, you should stay home. We continue to request that our DISK family follow the government health guideline. If you have any questions, continue to contact the office. As we receive updates and guidance from the government, we will keep our community informed.

Again we wish to thank all for the concerns and inquiries to keep Dominican International School, Kaohsiung safe and all to remain healthy.

Dear Parents of DISK,

Welcome back!

It is with great warmth we welcome back all the DISK students. Our first days have been very smooth in following the temperature and hand spray procedure.  Special thanks to everyone.

As with all procedures we are tweaking the steps to help in the overall procedures.  We will continue requiring masks to be worn while on campus.

Teachers have expressed positive results of the work completed by the students during the campus isolation period. Well done!  During the balance of this quarter, we will follow up on additional classroom time to help meet the expectation of students learning.

As a follow up to our travel survey we would like to know if any family member has had contact with anyone from any of the infective areas (China, Hong Kong, Japan, Viet Nam, etc) during the past three (3) week (February 3- 24).   Please notify Ms. Lee via email if you have had contact.

Lunch rebate:  We have contacted our lunch caterer and they will reimburse the lunch fee on March 2nd, for the past 16 days lunches.  Contact Ms. Lee to receive the rebate.

Reminder from MOE and CDC; we are instructed to inform all:  should one of the classes have an individual that has been confirmed CoVID: That entire class should be suspended for 14 days. Should the school have 2 or more individuals that have been confirmed ill with CoVID, then the entire school will be suspended for 14 days. This instruction includes students, staff and teachers.

In hoping for your continuous support to DISK, together let us be mindful of putting our children’s protection and safety as paramount.

Thank you and God bless.

Dear Parents of DISK,

Peace in Jesus and Mary! Hope this short correspondence finds you and your family safe and well. We know that it is within everyone’s knowledge of the present life-threatening illness spreading globally, the Novel Corona Virus has already claimed the lives of more than 800 people and almost 34,000 more currently infected (as of Feb 10).

DISK, being in the field of delivering education is not exempted from this; the administration has been in a constant meeting to address this unsolicited situation, creatively looking for an acceptable approach as to how to deliver this education without sacrificing the best interest of the children, putting in consideration of health and wellbeing as its highest objective.

After several decision-making meetings, it is agreed that perhaps it is in a time like this that technology will perform for us its greatest worth. Temporarily (February 10 – 24), our teachers will deliver the necessary learning – teaching lessons through the Google Classroom online platform, which is capable of real-time instructions and communication. This information was mentioned in the administration’s recent letter.

The curriculum presented will be the continuation of the subjects as planned in the third quarter. Please review the School Calendar on the website. During the two weeks of online learning, course content and material from February 3 – February 24 will be presented. This is to ensure that the learning process is not interrupted. To allow for adequate student learning and assessment review, the mid-term exam schedule will be adjusted. Specialty Subject Exams will be scheduled from March 9-13. Core Subject Exams will start on March 11-17.  The Iowa Test of Basic Skills will follow the regular calendar schedule (18-20, 23-27).

All extracurricular activities and programs will be canceled until further notice. The preparation periods used for these activities and programs will be re-assigned to student learning. This time will be adjusted through the inclusion of ECA periods, club electives, and assemblies (shortened or canceled). This is to remove the need for make up days during the semester and / or extending the school year into June.

We appeal for everyone’s cooperation to bear with the current situation, placing all hopes in our collective prayer that this situation will end in the soonest time, without endangering anyone within our circle of loved ones.  From now until the 25th of February, DISK gives its assurance that if the CDC global alert is lifted, we will resume immediately the classroom lessons that your child rightfully deserves.

In hoping for your continuous support to DISK, together let us be mindful of putting our children’s protection and safety as paramount.

Thank you and God bless.
